Dara Birnbaum is a New York City based video artist. She was among the first artists to work in video in the 1970s, reediting clips from television to examine and critique mass media. Pop pop video, among her most well known early works, was produced at The Kitchen with its advanced editing facilities. She has participated in exhibitions and screenings internationally since 1977, and her retrospective, The Dark Matter of Media Light, was organized by the S.M.A.K, Ghent in 2009.
