Steina and Woody Vasulka are pioneers of video art, having practiced in the genre since its early days in the late 1960s. They became well-known for their technical manipulation and exploration of the medium. Woody Vasulka and his wife, Steina Vasulka founded The Kitchen in 1971. The Kitchen takes its name from the original location, the kitchen of the Mercer Arts Center, where artists working mostly in video showed their work.
