Steina Vasulka is pioneer of video art, having practiced in the genre since its early days in the late 1960s. Vasulka, along with husband Woody Vasulka, founded The Kitchen in 1971. The Kitchen takes its name from the original location, the kitchen of the Mercer Arts Center, where artists working mostly in video showed their work.
