Joan La Barbara is a renowned composer and vocalist of the American avant-garde. Her voice appears on several of the primary documents of minimalism (such as Philip Glass' Music in 12 Parts and Steve Reich's Drumming) and she has been involved in the performance and composition of heralded works by the likes of Morton Feldman and Robert Ashley. Her own investigations of voice have yielded such important recorded works as Voice is the Original Instrument (Wizard, 1976).
