Pauline Oliveros is an American accordionist and composer, and a pioneer in the development of post-war electronic art music. Her approach to music is highly spiritual and therapeutic, both characteristics that she brought to the 1985 establishment of the Pauline Oliveros Foundation, which would later become the Deep Listening Institute and, now, the Center for Deep Listening at Rensselaer. She founded the Deep Listening Band in 1988 with Stuart Dempster and Panaiotis, based on her philosophy and practice of Deep Listening® which distinguishes the difference between the involuntary nature of hearing and the voluntary selective nature of listening.
