Wadada Leo Smith is trumpeter and composer working in avant-garde jazz and free improvisation. During the 1960s, he developed a systemic music language called Ankhrasmation, in which he uses cuneiform-like glyphs, color, and repertoire signs. He currently performs with three ensembles: Golden Quartet, Silver Orchestra, and Organic. Throughout his career Smith has received many awards, including a Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in 2009.
