Pioneers of the Downtown Sound

On the occasion of The Kitchen‘s 40th Anniversary, experimental musician and composer Rhys Chatham curated a music program revisiting his time as a performer and music curator at The Kitchen during the 1970s. Avant-garde performers Tony Conrad, Pauline Oliveros, Joan La Barbara, and Laurie Spiegel returned to The Kitchen’s stage to perform their canonical experimental music pieces, which debuted at The Kitchen in the 1970s, an era in which these landmark artists began shaping what was then the “downtown sound” of New York.
