Charles Gaines is a Los Angeles based conceptual artist working primarily in photography, drawing, and works on paper. Throughout the 1970s, Gaines' frequent use of grids and other systematized constructs mapped how rule-based procedures can construct meaning and objects. Reorienting his central concerns in 1980s, Gaines began to inflect his analytic work with themes of subjectivity and language. An eminent teacher at CalArts, Gaines' work was first shown at the Kitchen as part of the 2016 show "From Minimalism into Algorithm."
