Edwina Lee Tyler is a percussionist, composer, vocalist, dancer and actress. She formed the African percussion and dance ensemble, A Piece of the World in 1979, that aimed to perform and teach African music and dance. Tyler, who has been nicknamed the “Drum Grandmother” pioneered the playing of traditional African music. Throughout her career, she has toured Europe, Africa, and Korea. Tyler taught dance and was the director of percussion studies at Dance Theater of Harlem. She and A Piece of the World performed at The Kitchen alongside Women of the Calabash in 1984.
