James Allister Sprang is a Brooklyn-born, Miami-raised artist and rapper currently living in Philadelphia. Believing that he is just as much an artist when rapping under his alter-ego GAZR as he is when taking and exhibiting photographs, Sprang uses poetry, performance, and photography to explore the slippages between—and undermine the stock binary of—high and low culture. In 2017, he participated in The Kitchen’s two-week open work period Half Straddle: Here I Go, pt. 2 of You by giving a talk entitled “Black Genius knows this crossroads." Sprang is currently enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania’s MFA program in Studio Art.
