Kate Gilmore is a New York based artist who works with a variety of mediums including video, photography, sculpture, and performance. In her work she often uses her own body as a subject and tool, in combination with sound, and props to explore ideas about femininity. A recurring motif in her work is pain and hard labor that signify the struggle of trying to liberate from social constructs that define femininity. Her work was first shown at The Kitchen in 2009 in a group exhibition called One Minute More that considered approaches to presenting and documenting durational action and performance, and the labor implicit in that.
