William Villalongo is an American artist who works in painting, printmaking, sculpture, and installation. Villalongo uses iconic cultural imagery based in African-American and American history to engage with historic and social relationships through his practice of layering historical, iconographic, and cultural content. His narrative and figural works examine the mythical as metaphor for the black presence in art and society, as well as social perceptions thereof. In The Kitchen’s 2008 exhibition The Future As Disruption, Villalongo’s paintings remixed traditional Romantic, biblical, and mythical iconographies in combination with elements of kitsch to explore visions of mutating personal and cultural identities through fantasy and the otherworldly.
