Annie Sprinkle (b. Philadelphia, PA 1954) is a performer, author, sex-educator and artist based in New York City. Sprinkle, born Ellen F. Steinberg, is a former sex worker and porn star. She holds a BFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts and a PhD in Human Sexuality from the Institute of Advanced Study of Human Sexuality. Working in the porn and sex industry in the 1980s, Sprinkle was vocal about safe sex at the height of the AIDS epidemic, helping to de-stigmatize the disease and restore sexual autonomy to those living with HIV or AIDS. Sprinkle now identifies herself as an “ecosexual,” hoping to use sex and physicality to address climate change. She often collaborates with Veronica Vera and has worked with avant-garde theater director Richard Schechner. She premiered Post-Porn Modernist with Emilio Cubeiro at The Kitchen in 1990.
