Surrender

Robert Longo’s Surrender premiered at The Kitchen on May 19, 1979. A multimedia work, Surrender comprised a film as well as live music and performance. A saxophonist provided the soundtrack to the film, which depicts an unmoving Grecian statue of a young athlete. On the other side of the performance space, a young couple dressed in office clothes reminiscent of the 1950s embraced each other and proceeded to act out a rock-and-roll style dance in slow motion. Longo’s Surrender meditated on the interplay between the past and the present as well as movement and stillness in film, photography, and performance.
