Christian Marclay debuted at The Kitchen in 1982 with Disc Composition as a part of a New Performance Festival curated by Charles Dennis. He and five other artists expanded upon previous performances they called Avant-Guarde Arama done at Performance Space 122 to create a full evening of work. For Marclay’s showing of Disc Composition, he gathered a large ensemble of “human record players” who played records by scratching them, breaking them, throwing them on the ground, and stepping on them. By calling attention to the sound-making capabilities of objects, he pushed the boundaries of traditional definitions of music as rhythmic melody created by instruments.
