Since 1975, Stuart Sherman had created and performed numerous “Spectacles” in lofts, museums, galleries, streets, and parks throughout Europe and the U.S. In the Tenth Spectacle (Portraits of Places), the performance artist manipulated his supply of mass-produced objects to draw connections with various cities including Cairo, Toulouse/Lyon, and New York. Through his instantaneous actions, Sherman substituted his words describing the landscapes with the whimsical use of tangible toys, which gave Tenth Spectacle (Portraits of Places) an ambivalent quality.
