Retrospective: Solo and Group Spectacles 1975-80 presented selected works that were created by Stuart Sherman in the previous five years. The program was divided into two parts; the first focused on Sherman’s solo work, whereas the second consisted of works made in collaboration with other artists. In his own definition, Sherman described spectacle as a complex idea that involved “a precise sequence of simple actions performed with common objects in unusual contexts.” Whimsical and conceptual, Sherman’s spectacles presented object-relationships through the medium of direct performance.
