Mistaken Memories of Medieval Manhattan is a multi-channel video by Brian Eno comprising shots of downtown Manhattan taken from a single window, with an accompanying soundtrack excerpted from the artist's On Land and Music for Airports. Mistaken Memories innovates from Eno's previous video works, transitioning from landscape orientation to portrait. In 1981, Eno described this work as a series of “long continuous shots of the Manhattan skyline, and what movement there is in them is not under my control: drifting clouds, rain, smoke, fleeting light and shadows, birds, aircraft.” Mistaken Memories demonstrates Eno's interest in creating visuals and sound that capture and relate to the fluctuations of an ambient environment.
