Cotillion

Poster

From May 7–10, 1981, Arnie Zane premiered Cotillion at The Kitchen. Zane’s performance featured nine dancers, himself included, who engaged in an hour-long, constantly upbeat dance that included a diverse movement vocabulary of material drawn from rock, jazz, and modern contexts. The persistent changing of partners, ragdoll type movement, and dancers flying through the air characterized a performance dynamic that resembled the courtly eighteenth-century dance style from which Zane’s work got its name. An ensemble of four musicians, led by violinist Ross S. Levinson, provided Cotillion’s music.
