From May 7 through the 10, 1981, Arnie Zane premiered Cotillion at The Kitchen. Zane’s performance featured nine dancers, himself included, who engaged in an hour-long, constantly upbeat dance that included a diverse movement vocabulary of material drawn from rock, jazz, and modern contexts. The persistent changing of partners, ragdoll type movement, and dancers flying through the air characterized a performance dynamic that resembled the courtly 18th century dance style from which Zane’s work got its name. An ensemble of four musicians, led by violinist Ross S. Levinson, provided Cotillion’s music.
