Sapho is a French pop singer who was particularly active during the 1980s. She performed her hit single, “TV Is Eating up Your Brain” in pioneer video artist Nam June Paik’s January 1, 1984 broadcast, Good Morning Mr. Orwell, which was a refutation of George Orwell’s seminal novel and a statement of how the mass media could be used to create art. Good Morning Mr. Orwell was broadcasted live globally and featured performances by avant-garde luminaries including Laurie Anderson, Merce Cunningham, Peter Gabriel, John Cage, , Allen Ginsberg, Joseph Beuys, and Sapho, among others. Tapes of these broadcasts were shown at The Kitchen in January 1984.
