luciana achugar is an Uruguayan choreographer based in Brooklyn who has produced seven independent works. Prior to 2002, achugar danced for choreographers Jeremy Nelson Will Swanson, Maria Hassabi, Chameckilerner and John Jaspers. From 1999 to 2003, she worked in close collaboration with choreographer Levi Gonzalez. Much of her choreography openly displays signs of bodily pleasure, challenging conventional audience engagement and exploring pleasure as, in her own words, “the ultimate resistance to capitalism.” In 2010, The Kitchen premiered her work Pureo Deseo, which received a NY Bessie award. Inspired by paranormal activity, Gothic film and literature and the occult, Pureo Deseo was recognized for its eerie presentation of the body.
