Performance and video artist Vito Acconci debuted his first full-length video work The Red Tapes at The Kitchen in 1977. Dealing with the boundaries between close-ups and wide filmic space, the film splits into three different tapes. Tape 1: Common Knowledge focuses on self representation in the context of a mystery, Tape 2: Local Color expands the perspective into a psychological analysis of space, and Tape 3: Time Lag depicts Acconci and other performers acting out a “rehearsal of America.” As they are combined, the tapes highlight the schisms in American collective consciousness through their exploration of space.
