Abstract House was a new installation by the designer, performance, video and installation artist Vito Acconci in The Kitchen gallery. The installation consisted of a large structure designed by the artist to function as house, furniture, toy, globe and/or model. Viewers were encouraged to enter the structure and activate it, causing it to turn and move--thereby participating in the alteration of the structure and the space. Abstract House was part of a series of works made by Acconci at this time which endeavored to involve the viewer in the production of space and he considered the structure in the gallery to be a model for how it could be used by the community in public space. Abstract House is illustrative of Acconci’s turn to sculptural and permanent installations in the 1980s and anticipates his later movement into the fields of architecture and interior design.
