Steven Parrino (1958-2005) was a New York painter whose monochrome paintings and destroyed aesthetic responded to and literalized the art critical notion that "painting is dead." Appropriating the slick colors of popular culture for his paintings and by turn attacking these art works, Parrino performed a powerful if violent rejoinder to encroachment of popular culture on art. In 1985, Parrino participated in An Anticipated Ruin, a group show at The Kitchen focusing on the commodification of art and its impact on authenticity.
