Mary Ellen Strom creates works that unearth submerged narratives in the environment, history, and cultural discourse. Working primarily in video, Strom uses drawing, painting, sculpture and dance to generate an embodied understanding of place by utilizing movement, signs, and metaphors. In 1992 she presented Witness as part of We Could be Sheroes. This work examined the balance between safety and the erosion of individual privacy. It ultimately developed into a larger performance produced by Creative Time in 1994 that was awarded a Bessie Award for “Outstanding Creative Achievement.”
