Anthony Davis first performed at The Kitchen in 1981 with compositions from his Wayang series, performed by the music ensemble Episteme, which consisted of a percussion, wind instruments, violin, bass, vibraphone, marimba, and cello. Each composition from the program explored different kinds of repetitions. The series drew inspiration most notably from Balinese gamelan music and laid the groundwork for Davis’s second opera Under the Double Moon.
