Z’EV debuted FORMATIONS with what he referred to as an “Elemental Ensemble” of 9 musicians on gongs, chimes, drums, and other metal or wooden percussive instruments. The ensemble played ELEMENTAL MUSICS for half of their performances, and danced MOVEMENT: A SERIES OF GESTURES for the other half. The score drew from the first phrases from the Bible, though its spiritual explorations stretched deep into the process of its creation. By calling attention to the visceral relationship between musicians, their bodies, and their instruments, Z’EV compared the elemental ties of metal and wooden instruments to the spiritual intuition of the human body.
