Pictures was an exhibition of work by the American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe taken over the course of three years that dealt with sexual subject matter. A related show of work by Mapplethorpe, also called Pictures, took place at Holly Solomon Gallery concurrently. Later in his career Mapplethorpe would become known for his sensitive yet provocative images of the (often male) body that sometimes courted controversy in the media around issues of censorship and obscenity in the arts. This dual showing of work was however praised for its deft handling of its themes of eroticism and perversity.
