From May 24 through June 14, 1986, with an opening reception on May 30th, The Kitchen hosted Arts and Leisure, a gallery show curated by Group Material featuring the work of over forty artists. The show examined “art as a subject matter for art” to critique contemporary culture, using images from Fine Art, Pop Art, and popular culture in addition to incorporating performances and film. Contributing artists included Dean Young, Barbara Kruger, Walt Disney, Aric Obrosey, Norman Rockwell, Conrad Atkinson, Felix Gonzales-Torres, John Berger, and former Kitchen curator Howard Halle.
