Xaviera Simmons is an American interdisciplinary artist based in New York who works across photography, performance, video, sound, sculpture and installation. Simmons’ studio practice is an ongoing meditation on experience, memory, abstraction, present and future histories—specifically shifting notions surrounding landscape, character development and formal processes. Her interests in spatial and temporal shifts is reflected in her approach to artistic modes and processes: she might work exclusively on photography for some time, rotate over to choreographing performance for another part of the year, and then employ installation, video and sound to add texture to her performance or photography. CODED, curated by Matthew Lyons, was Simmons’ first solo exhibition and performance at The Kitchen.
