In Speaker Swinging, the Canadian pianist, composer, and sound artist Gordon Monahan was accompanied by Bruce Mau and Cathy Quinn, who stood on elevated platforms and swung three speakers in horizontal circles of about a dozen feet in radius. As performers swung the speakers at different rates, they produced three subtly different, dynamic, and successive tones that resulted in a variety of Doppler effects. Using his physical reality to explore sound, Monahan performed his Speaker Swinging as a part of Imaginary Landscapes, a two-week festival of electronic music that was curated by Nicolas Collins.
