Robert Longo’s Surrender premiered at The Kitchen on May 19, 1979. A multi-media work, Surrender comprised a film as well as live music and performance. A saxophonist provides the soundtrack to the film, which depicts an unmoving Grecian statue of a young athlete. On the other side of the performance space, a young couple dressed in office clothes reminiscent of the 1950s embraces each other and proceeds to act out a rock-and-roll style dance in slow motion. Taken together, Longo’s Surrender meditates on the interplay between the past and the present as well as movement and stillness in film, photography, and performance.
